Because I have been working on this article for almost two months, today I deleted everything and started over. On Kings Day I was diagnosed with a very serious illness and today I healed. That is why, the only thing that is important for me today is to thank some people that have changed my life, plenty of times along my short 19 years on earth.

In two months... I could not think of a better way of thanking my friends than learning my favourite quote ever in their language.

(Some of my friends asked me explicitly not to post their name, because I harmed them as I healed, and for that, I will eternally be sorry. I'm sorry!)

I'm Kaan — a student, a European, and someone who genuinely believes in people.

Studying European Studies at Maastricht University has given me a front-row seat to what European integration looks and feels like in practice. My academic interests orbit around European sovereignty, democratic legitimacy, and how the EU navigates an increasingly complex world.

But beyond the politics, I'm deeply interested in people. Whether it's a conversation over coffee in the Vrijthof or a debate after a lecture, the most valuable ideas I've encountered at university came from listening to perspectives I hadn't considered before.

I'm a strong believer that Europe's greatest strength is its diversity — not despite it, but because of it. That conviction shapes everything I study and write.
